This square divides the Oude Pijp (Old Pijp) and the NieuwPijp (New Pijp), built a few decades later. Looking from the Karel du Jardinstraat side at the façade to the right, you can see a fine example of the new architectural style. But turning to look northwards along the Tweede van derHelststraatoffers a vista of the old style, distinguished by finer detail in the facades and the difference in the heights of the buildings.
There’s a peculiar artwork in the center of the square. It is entitled In the Blue and was made by the artist AnneliesDijkman. Consisting of a concrete ellipse painted blue, it contrasts with the angular square. The sculpture is supposed to represent the sky and the celestial bodies.’
