St Bavo House was built as a temporary church of the Gerardus Majella parish and was opened in 1914. The church quickly became too small and in 1925 the construction of the new Gerardus Majella church commenced. The old church building was subsequently renamed the St Bavo House and first housed a drama club and a bridge club. It was also rented out to such radically different third parties as, for example, the Zeeburg gymnastics initiative, the mouth harp association Utile Dulci, the Theater Association for the teetotalers Excelsior, the Mandolin Club Ardito and the sport association Ten Companions. Through such mixed and intensive use over the 1930s, the St Bavo House increasingly received the character of a general clubhouse.
After the war the St Bavohuis hosted many liberation celebrations instead, thus leading to the general atmosphere of reconciliation. Divisions seemed to disappear and give away to creation of new, better mixed associations and initiatives. In 1951 this led to the opening of the Indischebuurt Community Centre here. Today, however, one hundred year after its opening, the church has returned to the building in the form of the global UCKG (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God), which was founded in Brazil in 1977 and is part of the Pentecostal movement.
