Yelagin Island is one of the northern islands in the delta of the Neva River. Together, they were called, by locals, simply “the Islands” – with the capital letter. Later, in the Soviet period, the name was changed to Kirov Islands, in honour of Sergei Kirov, a prominent Bolshevik leader.
The Islands, surrounded by the necklace of the Big, Middle and Small Nevka rivers, are all covered in green and look very picturesque. It is for this reason that they have always been favoured by locals as a place for relaxation.
