The Danube Canal is one of the off-shoots of the River Danube – which is Europe's second-largest river after the River Volga. The Danube has been an important trade route since Medieval times – connected Central and Eastern Europe to the Black Sea. During our excursion along its beautiful banks, we'll not only see the palaces and the Stock Exchange, military barracks and the Ministry of Defence building, but also a real classic of Art Nouveau architecture – the building of the Vienna Post Savings Bank. At the time this steel-and-concrete building was put up, contemporaries of its architect, Otto Wagner, found its design baffling. Today, however, thousands of architecture students visit Vienna just to study his work.
