Zone: The historic centre

Salzburg has long been unofficially regarded as the second capital of Austria, but if for centuries Vienna was the capital of the secular, then Salzburg is the spiritual center. It is a city surrounded by mountains, and in its earliest days was a refuge for persecuted Christians. Later it was the residence of senior Catholic clergy. One can only wonder at the stoicism of the early townsfolk, and admire the catacombs and cemetery of St. Peter, but there is also much to admire in the riches of the later era, as becomes evident when viewing Salzburg Cathedral and Archbishop's residence. And if your tastes and interest lean toward the purely secular, then it is worth noting that this city gave the world the great physicist, Doppler, and the musical genius, Mozart, and we shall see both of their homes during our tour.
