Zone: The Old Town

From Hamburg's main rail station we will walk through the heart of the Old City – the Town Hall Square, which is a comparative newcomer to the city map, appearing only in the mid-19th century, when the main areas of the old city of Hamburg were destroyed in a terrible fire. Although it was a terrible tragedy, it created the opportunity to create a beautiful ensemble of buildings here on the banks of the Little Alster Canal, and has almost something of the atmosphere of medieval Venice about it. Along our way we'll see the oldest church in Hamburg, St Peter's – which stands on the highest point in the Old City. Then by way of the Bridge of Solace we'll make our way to Deichstraße with its buildings from many different eras – each marked with an information-plate to tell you about its history.
